Can You Drink Hot Coffee After a Lip Tattoo? Aquarelle Aftercare Guide

If you’re wondering whether you can down a piping hot coffee after getting a lip tattoo, the short answer is no, not right away. After getting an Aquarelle lip tattoo, I’d advise you to steer clear of hot coffee, hot tea, and other scalding drinks for the first 48 hours, and ideally exercise some caution for up to 7 days while those lips are mending. The heat, steam, and direct contact can all combine to make that lovely lip area puff up, irritate the skin, and generally get in the way of proper healing.

I’m Olha Po, founder of Cosmetic Tattoo Studio Melbourne Face Figurati, and one of the most common aftercare questions I get asked in the treatment room is Can I now go ahead and grab that morning flat white. Now, I can’t say I’m not getting that question myself from Melbourne clients – plenty of them are already mentally sipping their coffee as they leave the treatment room. But now just isn’t the time to put your love of boiling-hot coffee to the test.

My Honest Take First

When it comes to taking care of those freshly inked lips, its all about the first few days – when the skin is tender, and the pigment is still settling. And its in those early days that making a few small changes can really make all the difference. Having one hot drink won’t suddenly ‘burn out’ your tattoo – but repeated heat exposure, steam and all the wear and tear can make things a lot rougher than they need to be.

At Face Figurati, we’ve got really clear aftercare instructions because I’d much rather prevent any problems from arising in the first place than have to fix them later. I’ve seen clients do everything right except still manage to have a hot cup of tea right from the mug the day after getting their tattoo – and then wonder why their lips are all puffy and patchy for longer than they need to be.

Why Aquarelle Lips Need A Little TLC

An Aquarelle lip tattoo is a gentle cosmetic tattoo technique that adds a watercolour-style tint rather than a hard lipliner effect. The treatment itself usually takes around 2.5 to 3 hours from the moment you walk in the door, and includes getting numbed up, the actual tattooing, and going over all the aftercare. For those interested in a more defined look, a Lipstick tattoo might be ideal. Most people need two sessions to get the best result, with a follow-up touch-up booked in around 6 to 8 weeks.

Straight after treatment, things can be a bit more delicate. You can expect a bit of swelling and some tenderness, and your lips will look a fair bit brighter than they will once they’ve fully healed. Reality vs expectation, right? – Your lips might look really bold the next day, but then they fade a bit once the initial healing phase is over. And that’s totally normal – not a sign that the pigment has failed in any way.

Why Heat Can Be A Real Problem

Its not so much about one big dramatic event, more about giving your skin the calmest possible environment to heal in. Freshly tattooed lips are basically a controlled wound, and heat can make things worse by increasing blood flow, worsening swelling, and even softening the early scab formation before it has a chance to close over properly.

And then there’s just the simple issue of physical contact – a hot cup pressed up against healing lips is not a good mix. Add in steam and caffeine, and you’ve got a few avoidable irritants all at once.

What to Watch Out for Early On

Hot drinks straight after getting a lip tattoo can be a real pain – they can increase swelling and make you feel awful for the first 24 to 48 hours. The steam and heat can also dry out your lips much faster, which isn’t super helpful if you’re trying to help them heal nicely and smoothly and keep the pigment from spreading. Of course, coffee is an added problem – the caffeine is a major dehydrator, and dehydration can lead to lips feeling super tight and dry, and if you don’t take good care of them, they can start to crack and heal unevenly. And if you live somewhere with a cold and windy climate like Melbourne, you’ll see the effects of that even more – especially during the dry, overheated indoor months.

A Safer Approach to Warm Drinks

If you only take one thing away from this, it’s that you should stick to really cool or lukewarm drinks for the first couple of days. The general healing time frame I give to clients is about 48 hours to 7 days, but that really depends on how swollen their lips are, how they tend to heal and whether they can drink something without getting their lips wet.

When clients ask me when they can have a cup of coffee after a lip tattoo, I always tell them to get their priorities straight – ie putting the temperature over getting their coffee fix. If you do need a coffee, just let it cool way down and try your best not to get it near your lips.

A Rough Guide for Each Day

Everyone’s healing process is different – whether you have oily skin, lick your lips a lot, work out a lot, spend too much time in the sun, or do not take good care of your lips, or any combination of these things, can really drag out the healing process. Below is a general rough guide of what we typically see in our studio.

Healing StageWhat You May NoticeDrink Advice
Day 0–2Swelling, tenderness, stronger colourCold or lukewarm drinks only; use a straw after lip tattoo
Day 3–4Dryness, light flaking, possible scab formationAvoid steaming drinks; keep beverages mild in temperature
Day 5–7Surface healing improves, and colour may look lighterWarm drinks may be okay if not hot and no direct rubbing
After 7 DaysMost surface healing has settledUsually safe to return to normal if healing is smooth

In my experience, it’s about 2 in 3 clients panicking when their colour looks lighter around day 5 to 7. That early fade is pretty normal during the healing process, and it doesn’t mean the pigment has gone anywhere. The real result will take a few weeks to settle before you can see the true colour.

Not Necessarily a Descent into Despair

You don’t have to become a slave to ice water and a life of constant dread. All you need to do is keep a level head for a while after your treatment. Your goal is to reduce heat, irritation and contact while your lips are in a vulnerable state.

What trips up a lot of clients is how often they accidentally touch their lips without even realising it. Coffee cups, leaning on your hand while eating, napkins, kisses, gym towels – every little bit counts.

Some Common Sense Drinking Rules

For the first 48 hours, use a straw when drinking water, smoothies or even cooled coffee. Using a straw helps keep the area clean and reduces friction on the lip border. If you’re desperate for a hot cuppa after getting a lip blush treatment, let it cool down a bit before you try to drink it.

  • Cool drinks over cold for the first two days is a good rule of thumb
  • Don’t go pressing your mug against your lips
  • If you do get some moisture sitting on the skin, just gently pat it away
  • Stick to the aftercare ointment as advised, don’t overdo it
  • Give spicy, acidic foods a wide berth for as long as your lips are still feeling raw

The Foods That Will Set You Back

It’s not just hot drinks you need to worry about. Lip blush aftercare also involves avoiding foods and habits that can dry out, sting, or cause inflammation in your lips. In short, just give your lips a quiet week so they can stay healthy for longer. It’s not the most glamorous thing in the world, I know, but trust me its worth it.

The Most Common Mistake

People often focus on the pigment and forget about skin recovery. They’ll ask about coffee, then go eat a bunch of spicy noodles, drink a glass of wine, catch a little too much sun, or even give their partner a peck on the cheek like nothing has happened. Please don’t do that. For the first week, try to avoid alcohol, very spicy foods, highly acidic foods, too much caffeine, pools and strong sun. And yeah, that means no kissing or sunbathing while your skin is still healing.

If you only have one session to look forward to, you can expect a bit of an improvement, but keep in mind the result will be far from perfect. The best focus in that one session is getting the shape and tone right. Density and refinement will usually come after the second session.

When to Reach Out

Normal healing is pretty straightforward – it involves some swelling, dryness and a bit of light flaking. But if you notice something more serious, like escalating pain, pus, spreading redness, heat from the area, or a fever, that’s not normal and might mean you’ve got an infection that needs looking at.

At Face Figurati, I always tell my clients to just shoot me a text if something doesn’t feel right. I’d much rather answer a ‘is this normal?’ question than have you try to figure it out from some random online advice because that person had a totally different treatment with a different provider – Dermaluxe Beauty, Sublime Beauty, Effortless Permanent Makeup (Judy Liang), MazicalEyes, LashBoutiqueFL, WakeUpWithMakeup, Alexia Rocha Aesthetics, AnnaZur or Cosmetic Tattooing Brisbane – just to name a few – technique, pigments and aftercare can vary wildly between providers.

Who Should Hold Off on Treatment

Lip tattooing might not be the best fit for you right now if you’re dealing with an active cold sore, cracked lips, recent issues with your lip fillers, ongoing uncontrolled health issues or if you’re expecting too much from a single session. People from Melbourne who book appointments during peak sun months need to keep an eye on their healing because it can really get affected by the sun and dry wind – especially when it comes to comfort and how well the colour holds up.

You can expect to pay between $450 and $800 for your initial lip tattoo session with Aquarelle in Melbourne, and touch-ups are usually charged separately. Your costs can go up if you need to correct old work, because it tends to take longer and carries a bit more risk.

One Last Bit of Advice

natural looking permanent lip makeup

Can you have a piping hot cup of coffee or tea right after getting an Aquarelle lip tattoo? I’d recommend waiting at least 48 hours, sticking to lukewarm or cool drinks for a bit and being pretty careful for up to 7 days, depending on how your skin is healing. Little tweaks like that really do make a big difference to your comfort, how fast you heal, and how well the colour holds up.

It’s me, Olha Po. After years of doing cosmetic tattoos in Melbourne, I can tell you this: good results aren’t just about the artist’s hand- there’s a lot that comes down to what you do after you leave the studio.
